March 9, 2015Texas Water Day- March 26
March 13, 2015
Enjoy the beauty and serenity of the Colorado River with the 6th Annual Paddlers’ Rally on April 11, while celebrating Earth Day 2015 a few days early.
Kayakers, canoers and stand-up paddleboarders are welcome to join the rally, which runs 4 ½ miles upriver from Bay City and back. The event honors Earth Day on April 22, and draws attention to a need for ‘equitable’ allocations of water on the Colorado.
The event is free and open to the public.
WHAT: Nine-mile roundtrip for kayakers, canoers and stand-up paddleboarders
WHEN: 9 am, Saturday, April 11
WHERE: Riverside Park, Bay City, located on FM 2668
HOW: register in advance, since the first 100 to do so will receive a commemorative T-shirt and other prizes. For $25, paddlers may reserve a kayak (single or tandem) onsite for the event. Contact Willie Younger, rally coordinator, at 979-240-4872 or at w-younger@att.net
WHY: The purpose of this annual gathering is to celebrate all of Texas’ alluring freshwater streams and the uplifting advantages they provide. Rally on the River began in 2010 as a way for the Matagorda County Birding Nature Center to observe Earth Day and promote the pleasures of paddling while developing a greater understanding and appreciation for nature’s most valuable gift – water.
This event will also address how Texas will effectively and equitably meet the ever-increasing demand for water as the state’s population continues to grow.
